Apocalypter Guide

Tips and frequently asked questions

The questions below are the ones that actually come up in Apocalypter's Steam discussions, YouTube comment sections and our inbox — with separate answers for the released game and the older demo. The full game released on September 23, 2026; price, the launch discount and the hotfix list live on the release page, and the achievement names and dated completion snapshot are on the achievements page.

Controls and settings

How do I invert the mouse Y axis? There is no invert checkbox. Set mouse sensitivity to a negative value and both axes flip — the discussions' standard answer, confirmed in-game.

How do I equip armor or a backpack? Hold F to wear or change either item, following the October 9 change. A tap is not the same command. If all interactions fail, the same hotfix addresses a separate interaction bug. Equipment help.

What are the default keys? Left mouse button: grab / punch. F: interact. L: flashlight. F2: first aid. Tab opens the status/relations view. Escape: settings. Driving controls (steering, throttle) are in settings with sensitivity sliders.

The game runs badly on my PC. What can I change? The official forum's most-viewed fix is switching the screen mode (fullscreen / borderless changes behave differently per setup). After that: lower resolution scale and shadows. A minimum GPU listing is not a frame-rate test: compare your settings and the affected scene instead of assuming newer hardware excludes a game-side problem.

Can I turn off hunger and thirst? Yes — Settings → Gameplay cheats has explicit toggles. This is officially supported, and the discussions recommend it for players who want the scavenging and driving without upkeep meters.

Multiplayer and controllers

Does Apocalypter have multiplayer or co-op? The store page lists it as a single-player game, and nothing official has changed that. There is a community ApocalpyterMP mod on Nexus that adds hosted co-op through Steam — it is an unofficial BepInEx plugin and an early build, covered on the mods page. The honest answer for the base game is: not currently, not promised.

Is there controller support? Partial — the store description lists "Partial Controller Support (driving only)", and separately steering wheel support is listed as a feature. Steam's own category list does not carry a controller entry, so treat menus as keyboard/mouse territory: keyboard and mouse is the intended primary setup.

Will there be character creation or a female option? Not in the demo — the developer's answer in the discussions is direct. The released store describes armor, backpack, flashlight and binocular upgrades rather than a character-creation menu.

Saves and versions

Do demo saves survive updates? The developer's patch notes explicitly maintain save compatibility across demo versions, with minor first-load quirks (items left in the world may hang in the air until physics catches up; dropped weapons in old saves can vanish on the first load). Save often; it is one slot.

Will demo progress carry into the full game? Nothing suggests it will. The demo is a separate app described as an outdated build. Treat it as a training ground, not a head start.

Is the demo still updated? It received maintenance patches into 2026 (fixes to enemy behavior, armor, UI rework, save compatibility). It is not abandoned — but it is also not where new content lands.

Survival and car questions

Where do I find engine oil / water / fuel? The same classes of places: camps, sheds, wrecks, buildings. The fuel camp, the dog boat camp and Buzzgut's base are named in the discussions as reliable water sources (large dew collectors). Motor oil is a common container loot; if you are desperate, prioritize buildings.

Why is my car burning water so fast? Radiator condition and radiator-to-engine sizing, in that order. A small radiator behind a V6 will drink liters; a leaking radiator will drink more. The car parts guide walks the fix.

Why can't I grab that item while holding my gun? This was a fixed bug (you can now pick up bandages, kits, nuts and ammo while armed). If you are on an old build: holster first, grab, re-arm.

Is the boss required? No — Buzzgut is content, not a gate, in the demo. Save him for when your car and ammo are ready.

What happens when I die? You lose the run's position, not the save-slot identity: you respawn and carry on with what the game gives you back. The demo's saves and death handling have both been patched; treat death as expensive, not final.

After launch (September 26 – October 9)

Can I rebind throttle, brake, clutch and steering? Yes. The September 30 hotfix made those keys rebindable in Settings → Controls; the October 1 hotfix then fixed the leftover cases where they still did nothing, and the October 9 hotfix fixed a clutch case that survived both. If driving inputs felt dead at launch, check that screen.

How do I turn sandstorms off? Settings → Gameplay Cheats has a Disable Sandstorm toggle as of September 30. The same patch also stopped sandstorms turning back toward the player after a load.

I turned fatigue off and still cannot sleep. Fixed September 26. Sleep no longer needs a minimum tiredness.

Items attach in the wrong place / "neck crank". Fixed September 28 — that was the item-holding bug.

Peaceful mode still shows the boss UI or music. Fixed September 26.

Items hover, the trailer detaches or the car jumps after loading a save. That cluster is the October 9 hotfix: engines, radiators and cassettes now lock physics the moment a save loads, trailers stop detaching on load (a car saved in an odd position can still shed one, per the notes), and dropped items stop respawning above you. Save files stay compatible, and the same patch fixed the "can't interact with anything" bug.

The five post-launch hotfixes are listed in full on the release page.
