Apocalypter demo guide
Apocalypter's demo has been free on Steam since November 18, 2025, and it was the only version of the game anyone could play before release. The full game is out now (September 23, 2026) — the demo is still free and still listed, which makes it a no-cost trial of the same car systems. It is also, by the developer's own description, a snapshot: the store page labels it "an outdated version of the game with much less content, only one car, one boss, and only one save slot."

That warning is accurate, and it is worth understanding exactly what it means before you spend your first evening with the game.

What the demo includes
| Area | In the demo | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| World | Full procedurally generated map with selectable seed | Effectively unlimited to explore |
| Cars | One vehicle | "Only one car" per the store page — but parts are not limited |
| Car customization | The full no-limits part system | Engines, radiators, tires, storage, cosmetics, the part adjuster tool |
| Bosses | One | The demo's boss is Buzzgut; the full game adds multiple boss fights |
| Save slots | One | The full game is not limited this way |
| Factions | Coyotes (friendly), Scrapyard (hostile) | Both return in the full game |
| Weapons | Melee tools and handmade firearms | "The demo only has handmade guns" — the developer confirmed modern guns are not in yet |
| Trading | Traders with randomized stock, nuts as currency | Buy/sell works; merchant inventories change |
| Survival | Hunger, thirst, fatigue, health, water as coolant | Can be disabled in settings (gameplay cheats) |
| Character | No character creation | Absent in the demo; the released store describes equipment upgrades |

What is not in the demo
- More cars. You can rebuild and customize the one you get, but the "find different cars" part of the pitch is a full-game feature.
- The warlord hunt. The store page's headline goal — eliminating warlords and mounting their trophies on your car — is not what the demo's single boss quest is. The release build confirms it: "Send every Warboss to the grave" is one of the 11 achievements. Treat the demo's boss as a preview of the boss-fight format.
- Modern firearms. Community requests to add modern guns got the answer that the demo is limited to handmade weapons; the full game treats weapons as a collection goal.
- Multiplayer. Apocalypter is a single-player game on the store page, and nothing has been announced to change that.
- Character creation. Asked and answered in the discussions: not in the demo.
Demo updates and full-game saves
Treat a demo save and a full-game save as separate progress. The demo is a different Steam app with a single save slot. A hotfix saying saves are compatible refers to the build being patched; it is not a demo-to-full-game transfer promise.
The demo has kept receiving small maintenance patches into 2026 (save compatibility across demo versions was explicitly maintained, along with enemy behavior and UI fixes). If you return to an old demo save after an update, the developer's own patch notes say saves remain compatible, with occasional cosmetic glitches on first load.
Is the demo still worth playing?
Yes — the framing just changed now that the game is out:
- As a free trial: it costs nothing and runs the same car systems the full game is built on. If you are unsure whether the radiator-and-water loop is for you, this answers it before you pay.
- As performance insurance: the requirements are modest, but if your machine stutters, find that out on the demo rather than before buying the released game. Demo performance is a useful trial, not a guarantee for every full-game scene or setting.
- As training: the part interactions (radiator sizing, oil, storage) are the game's real skill curve, and everything that transfers as knowledge is covered by the beginner guide.
- It is not a story demo. There is no plot to spoil; it is a survival sandbox with one boss target.
Release hotfixes are not demo patch notes
The September 26–October 9 main-game hotfixes cover controls, sleep, trailers and physics locking. October 9 also changes backpack and body armor to hold F. Follow the current beginner guide for those release interactions; do not assume that every named fix was applied to the older trial app.

Search "Apocalypter" on Steam: the demo is a separate free listing ("Apocalypter Demo"). It is Windows-only, like the main game, and requires the same general hardware class. The full game released on September 23, 2026 and the demo stays listed as a reduced build — the store page has never listed a removal date.
